Podcasts about web design and development for my enjoyment 2014
January 28, 2014Nearly everyday, Monday to Friday I commute to work. All in all a quite short trip, especially if I take my bicycle down to the station which is like 3 minutes, downhill all the way! The train ride is 16 min and the walk to the office is another 7-8min. These days I prefer to walk between home and the station, get some extra exercise or something, this makes one way trip roughly 50 minutes, which is great podcast time!
Here are a short list of podcasts that I will enjoy during, well, at least first half of 2014. They are all about web design and development or software development related to the internet or mobile.
Boagworld - A long time standing favorite of mine, they been at it since, well forever, something like 7 years. It is a great one hour show, hosted by Paul Boag and Marcus Lillington were they talk and discuss the daily life of web professionals that run and or create web sites. There is a great deal of waffle going on, which is great fun and now and then there are some great gems of business advise, client management or just a spur of creativity.
Hanselminutes - Described as Fresh Air for Developers and it sure is. The show features over 400 episodes to this day and is hosted by Scott Hanselman, a teacher, programmer and speaker that has been blogging for over a decade and written software most of us has used in our daily lifes. Scott invites both unknown and known people and talk about issues most us web designers and developers can relate too or struggle with on a day to day basis. The pure diversity and the fact that Scott knows what he is talking about and has special kind of honesty makes it a nice show with good insights.
The Big Web Show - Hosted by the legend himself, Jeffery Zeldman, the man who thought the world about web standards and its importance, with some help of course. A mix about what is going on and a mix of business and the latest trends or “Everything web that matters” as Jeffery himself describes it. Also worth to check out the old archive at 5by5.
The Creative Coding Podcast- A more technical podcast that talk about the ins-and-outs of programming for visual and creative applications. The show is hosted by the gentlemen Seb Lee-Delisle and Iain Lobb, two award winning veterans that know their way around digital media and the interesting discussions they bring.
Draft - A podcast from the people behind the site Unmatched style that you might have heard about. Draft is a show about the craft of designing for the web hosted by Giovanni DiFeterici and Gene Crawford. In many ways a quite hands on show with discussion about concrete and applicable topics.
Shoptalk - In Shoptalk the hosts Chris Coyier and Dave Rupert talk about web design, development and user experience. Both Chris and Dave has been around for a while and Chris is the founder of CSS Tricks a site that most web folks has visited.
WebDevRadio - On the Web Dev Radio podcast Michael Kimsel talks about tools, trends and technologies for web developers. A long time running show, the episodes are released now and then, but it is not that far apart between new episodes and the wait is worth it. There is a lot of PHP talk and some Grails and now and then there are guests on the show. So far I have not been disappointed and Michael does a great job.
Unfinished Business - A podcast from the web designer and author Andrew Clarke. It is supposed to be about “A weekly discussion show about the business end, the sharp end of web, design and creative industries.” but most of the time it is just Andy and guests that waffle on, which is great fun. However, they always seems to strike a cord on a interesting topic and is definitely worth listen. Most due to the fact that Andrew has tremendous knowledge and he shares the important parts about running a web design business.
Ruby 5 - Another long running podcast that is one of my favorites. Two times a week the hosts Jonathan Jackson and Paul Elliott presents the latest from the world of Ruby in a 5 minutes long show. Great way to keep up with new releases and techniques in the Ruby community.
Nitch - Seems interesting, haven’t had the chance to listen to it, but the topics feels quite relevant and the hosts Jonathan Stark and Kelli Shaver talks about building apps that run everywhere using open web standards like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, REST, and JSON. While providing great info and insights using good examples and references.
That is my current running podcast list over shows that I frequently listens to. If you have some great tip on a podcast that I should listen to, please leave a comment. Happy listening!
